驚聞您離世的消息，只能用“難以置信”四個字來形容。在那幾天前才高興地聽說您情況好轉，還將這消息轉告了幾位同仁，誰知接下來的消息，卻像一座沉重的鐵門，就在面前轟然落下！
⋯⋯
您是我台大的學弟，也是UCLA的學弟。我們曾經飽看滿園杜鵑花的艷麗，也多年浸沐在有濃郁尤加利芳香的南加州空氣中。
您學成回到台灣後，成為台灣大氣學界氣候動力領域的一位中堅人物，在這議題上，您用不懈的研究熱忱，精湛的學術功力，深深地刻畫下您的貢獻，把RCEC的名號，驕傲地展示在世界學術論壇上。您是台大大氣系的傑出系友，也是UCLA大氣系的傑出系友。當然，您更是我們環變中心的傑出研究員。
我深深地以有您這樣一位學弟及同僚為傲。
今天環變中心的同仁們來向您告別，您奉上天的召喚離我們遠去。但我們怎能忘記，您走廊上純真的笑容，業務會議裡爽朗的笑聲，研討會上深刻的發問？

周佳是我在UCLA的学长。我和内人，参加了两次他主辦的旅游，玩过了美国中西部许多州，之后，又一起去露营，滑雪，吃麻辣火锅，有许多快樂的回忆。
周佳辦旅游很认真，行前還給了個talk，像是参加学術队伍的出游似的。他對看日出特有兴趣，我们跟着看了好几个国家公园的日出。1997年夏天我们出游，晚上九點半才到旅馆，早上三点半就得爬起來，开车摸黑爬山去Grand Teton看日出。虽然很累，不过那次的日出美景非常非常地洪荒壮丽，令我永生难忘！
周佳不愛喝水，也很少需要上厕所。我则一天到晚喝水，常跑厕所。有一次他载我和内人，開四五小时的车要去某处蕕玩。开一开，我說我想上厕所。⋯⋯
“怎麽又要上？不是刚才才上過？”
“刚才水喝太多了。。。”
“不行！不給你去。” 他露出嘲弄的神情。
我坐在前座，本來想，好哇，我就在車裡解决，反正是你的車。看他正在聽音乐，靈机一动，就把录音带拔出來，抓在手裡說：“不給我上厕所就不讓你聽音乐！”
他瞪了我一眼，摇了摇頭。这样僵持了约五分钟，他才說:"好吧好吧！“把車開下高速公路，到加油站裡。
我太太說：”你们两個好幼稚！“
我们喜欢看周佳高谈闊论，神采飛扬的样子。有时有些朋友會講些话激他。有一次某個同学，刚去玩完加拿大的Banf国家公園，和我们及周佳一起聊天。她無意中說了：”看完加拿大的美景，就觉得美國國家公园個风景都不算什么了。“ 这譲主修大氣科学，副修美国旅游的周佳有话要說了：”怎麽可以这樣說！每個国家公园都有它独特的美，像是。。。。“而我们就看着彼此，一边微笑着，一边享受周佳再次的提醒我们，哪個公园有什么美景可看。
我很幸运，今年七月會台，還在医院见到周佳一面。我知道他病得很重，但他依然生气蓬勃，谈着他的工作和研究。我鼓起勇气，为他做了祝福祷告。十月底又會台，他就已不方便见客了。他是一位很特别的朋友。我很感谢在我生命中，有着與他的交集。願上帝怜悯他，接他到那有丰盛水草的溪邊至美地。

周佳住院以來，極其低調，盡量不要驚動周遭朋友，我是在228那天瞎打瞎撞跑去醫院探望他，去之前根本不知狀況，到了才發現事態嚴重。聽他說連他的助理當時也是毫無察覺。原因就是他雖然一邊接受化療，仍然有空就在病床上遠端指導學生，修改論文與投稿期刊。
跟我言談之間他仍然精神奕奕，我笑說他是我看過最不像病人的病人，其樂觀與毅力無以倫比。
走時仍交代我不要主動告知嘉友會的朋友。心想也對，我們都不是醫學相關專長，其實幫不上忙，卻可能因為探望他影響他的休息，而且依他的個性一定又要打起精神跟朋友們解釋一番，反倒是像他在勸我們放心。所以，今年幾次嘉友會聚會，我都刻意隱瞞這件事，其實心中是想以他的樂觀與韌性，一定能撐過這個難關。
但是每個月私訊他得到的消息卻事與願違。而即使定期有接收他訊息的我，在上周看到FB上的訊息，依然如同晴天霹靂，不能置信。因為對於他的樂觀爽朗、自得其樂與強韌，我仍然歷歷在目，彷如昨日。
周佳是我們嘉友會朋友中，我最覺得放心的一位，這些事如果發生在其他人的身上，恐怕無法像他一樣的堅強。而我始終相信他是一個人獨自旅行，也不會感到孤單的人。⋯⋯
周佳，希望大家對於你的深深懷念與滿滿祝福，能伴隨你邁向一個人的旅程。
認識周佳，從國中開始；一路到高中、大學，雖然從未同班、同系，但也都是同校。
到了LA，在同一個城市過著留學生的生活，甚至是一段時間的室友關係，這一路來的情誼，是百年修來的緣份。
我所熟悉的周佳，是他在青澀的求學時代。這跟這邊大多數人所認識的周佳，是他在研究時代的努力期、爆發期與豐收期。

不一樣的是，或許對他少了一份尊重與敬仰，然而卻多了一份濃、純、樸，可以拿他來消遣的的古老情誼；但是相同的是，對他的離開都有同樣的不捨！

Obituary of Chia Chou (sent to SSG GEWEX, prepared by Huang-hsiung Hsu)
Chia Chou, one of the original members of Research Center for Environmental Changes, Academia Sinica (RCEC), passed away on November 20, 2014 in Taipei, after a year-long battle with cancer. He is 48 years old and survived by his wife Vivian.
He received B.S. from the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, National Taiwan University and his Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences from UCLA, working with David Neelin o⋯⋯n tropical atmospheric modeling. After he returned to Taiwan, he became a Research Fellow at RCEC, Academia Sinica, Taiwan, with joint faculty appointments at National Taiwan University and National Central University. He is well known internationally for his contributions to understanding precipitation changes under global warming and other key mechanisms in tropical climate dynamics. He was recognized by the Ta-You Wu Commemorative Award of National Science Council for scientists younger than 40 of all fields in Taiwan and the Outstanding Research Award of National Science Council of Taiwan, and had served on the Scientific Steering Group of the Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX).
Chia had been an enthusiastic mentor to many young Taiwanese scientists in climate research. He had been active in the joint typhoon-climate research between Taiwan and China for the past 5-6 years. He was a joyful person, full of life and boundless good humor, and a pleasure to interact with. He will be long remembered as a good friend, a great teacher, an excellent scientist, and a wonderful person.
